THE FOCUS
Fayette Community Service Organization, (FCSO) Incorporated is a non-profit organization that is focused on making significant, positive changes for the Jefferson County community and surrounding counties.  Growing Into The Beginning of Knowledge Youth Outreach Center, affectionately referred to as GI101, is a youth organization that was birthed out of FCSO and is dedicated to tapping into releasing the initiative and leadership potential in our youth to develop productive businesses that respond to the needs of their communities.  GI101 is focusing on the health issue of obesity that is a major epidemic in Fayette, Mississippi.  As reported by the United States Center for Disease Control, Mississippi is recorded as the most obese state in the country with a 34.4% obesity rate and with Jefferson County listed as the most obese county in the state per capita.  Mississippi has held this title for the last consecutive six years.  The Center for Disease Control states that obese children and adolescents are at risk for health problems during their youth and as adults obese children and adolescents are more likely to become obese as adults.  One study found that approximately 80% of children who were overweight at ages 10-15 years were obese adults at age 25 years.  Another study found that 25% of obese adults were overweight as children.  The latter study also found that if overweight begins before 8 years of age, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.  Obesity is a major epidemic that plagues our nation!  The health care budget now exceeds 2.2 trillion dollars and a third of that money is allocated for chronic diseases.  Chronic diseases are attributed directly to poor diet and sedentary lifestyles.  Now, if we do the math, that is $726 billion that could be allocated to other needs in the budget such as education!  If we do not curtail this problem, it is estimated that the health care budget will exceed 4 trillion by the 2017!

My husband and I recently attended a Global Obesity Summit in Jackson, MS. We are from Jefferson County, MS, the county labeled by the CDC as the most obese county in the nation since 2004. Mississippi as a state has held the heavyweight title for the past 6 consecutive years and I believe we are in the lead position for the 7th year as well. Therefore we understand that Jefferson County is ground zero for this silent epidemic that is overtaking our community and more specifically, signing an early death certificate for our children. We also learned at the conference that the research showed that behavioral, environmental and cultural aspects play a major part in combatting this issue. These are the factors that this program will address for the information to be adequately disseminated to the masses of individuals of our state, to understand the major implications of disaster that are emminent for us and our children if we do not curtail this problem now. We have developed a strategic, implementation plan to conquer this complex issue.

We believe it is the lack of the full understanding of the ripple effect that addressing this issue carries as to why there is such lack of support at this time, but there are many far reaching implications such as the positive social impact, the rise in education levels for the children, the reduction in health care costs for the state and the attraction of big business to our area, just to name a few reasons.

THE PROPOSAL

FCSO in conjuction with GI101 Youth Outreach Center proposes to begin a state wide 'Fat to Fit' Campaign to dismiss this negative stigma and statistic that Mississippi and the city of Fayette has carried for the past 6 consecutive years.  We refuse to just stand by and let this negative statistic continue and be passed down to  the younger generation.  We will enlist the support of major sponsors, all city officials, all churches, Alcorn State and Mississippi State Universities Extension Programs and the community to accomplish this mission.  GI101 proposes to:

  • Pre-register at least 9,000 participants
  • Enlist major sponsors to commit to a cash donation per pound or inch lost from participants for a duration of 12 months.  The funds will build an aquatic center and sports complex for the various communities to continue a healthy lifestyle.
  • Provide monthy incentives for the biggest losers from business sponsors
  • Encourage local restaurants and businesses to offer a 10-20% discount on items for the 'Fat to Fit' Campaign registered cardholders
  • Facilitate monthly weigh-in screenings and health seminars
  • Provide the leadership and volunteers to host walking and aerobic exercise events during each month
  • Provide healthy recipes and demonstrations
  • Provide fresh fruit and vegetables without pesticides or chemical agents through the agricultural division of GIYOC
  • Host motivational seminars to actively engage in a healthy lifestyle change and discern the positive from the negative options
  • Increase participants abilities to make good choices by providing fun and interactive educational workshops that develop a health conscience community overall
